Point downspouts away

Extend downspouts at least 1–2 metres from the foundation.

Check the grading

Soil should slope away from the house. Low spots near the wall collect water.

Test the sump pump

Pour a bucket of water into the pit — the pump should start on its own. Consider a battery backup.

Clear window wells and drains

Leaves and ice in window wells and floor drains send water inside.

Look for early signs

Damp spots, white residue on walls and a musty smell mean water is getting in.
